And that’s not to mention that the Nikon 50, 24-70, and 70-200 are all the best lenses of their type ever made. And Mirroless is not increasing in absolute numbers, its decreasing so is DSLR but in a faster pace. It lacks behind some aspects customers should see it in the final results. With the release of the budget-friendly Nikon Z5 full-frame camera, we now have a number of different options to choose from in the Nikon mirrorless line-up. Casual video shooters probably won’t notice the difference, but if you’re truly serious about video, the Z6 will be well worth the extra $400. This may not be important at all for you. To keep production costs down I maintain a single card slot would have been better as the 5 is NOT a pro level camera by any stretch. This is how the Sony Real-Time Tracking system works, by the way, and Nikon’s Focus Tracking works almost as good in decent light, though it gets a bit less reliable in “terrible” light. In our full review, coming soon, we’ll compare this new $1,400 Nikon FX mirrorless camera against the Sony and Canon full-frame competition, too, and dive deeper into other key aspects of the Nikon Z5. You don't need to spend a fortune to buy a camera that's designed for videography. @bernardlang, sorry but you must read more carefully, R6 (bundled with RF 24-105 stm) is #19 and it's the first full frame camera (DSLR and MILC) on that website. Adapting lenses via a camera manufacturers own adapter – Nikon F to Z or Canon EF to RF – is an entirely different experience. The S series optics are higher quality (close to zero chromatic aberration, perfectly even edge to edge) but you pay for that difference. I guess it's true what they say...you get what you paid for. The Z6 and D780 share a more advanced 24MP BSI sensor. On the other hand I’d love to be able to mount Nikon S lenses on my a9II. I was interested in the small size. @Armanius, You're talking nonsense. (HINT: Want to know what actually does set the Z6 apart from the Z5? The new DJI Mavic Mini 2 includes several notable improvements over the original Mavic Mini, including 4K video, Raw photo capability, and DJI's robust OcuSync 2.0 transmission system. B&H | Adorama | Amazon. Nikon hasn't put out compact f2.8 lenses yet (f2.8 pancakes are on the road map, 40mm and 28mmm). Sony is the mainstay? Yes, my older ones looked a little bit waxy sometimes at 5000+, but you can imagine the abysmal light requiring such high ISO. I got a good offer for a Z5 body with FTZ. I agree. From customer standpoint Z5 makes no sense. The shutter of the A7R II is also good for 500.000 actuations. Nikon has certainly progressed to a point where autofocus reliability, in general, is a non-issue for most photographers. But €70 all the same. Video: Unfortunately, the best the sensor can do. The Nikon Z5 in particular is a brilliant, entry-level mirrorless camera that offers superior image quality and a fantastic range of features for both photography and videos. "THOUGHTS" IS PAID TO POST PRO-CANON AND ANTI-SONY PROPAGANDA. But I like the top LCD screen and us it on my current D7500. (Also, remember, you could buy three-point-two Nikon Z5’s for the price of ONE Sony a9 II!). We took a look at the field and selected the Panasonic S1H and GH5 as the best cameras for serious videographers. How did Nikon make such an affordable full-frame camera, one that at a glance seems not make any compromises in terms of physical quality, nor image quality? Still has more dynamic range than z6 check photos to photons. Add a credit card now and it will be charged for an Annual Premium Membership ($499) at the end of your trial. Sure the number of cases rises, but the number of deaths and the number of people in intensive care is still rather low. Make no mistake; it’s not perfect, but that’s the fault of the adapter and third-party lens, not Nikon. stand-up to A7RII un-cropped 4K. The AF actually hindered my shooting and I am talking about using a single point in single-shot mode. So, the Z5 wins, hands-down. In fact I saw 'better', was more creative and thoughtful and learnt far more with entry level kit...and anyway, NOTHING about this cam is entry level if you were started with film in a manual rangefinder. The ergonomics of the Sony a7RII are also pretty bad, worse than the models that came later as Sony tweaked stuff to respond to criticism. @johnami We talk about specialized cameras stores, online or no, which sell it at 1900€On PhotoCineComedie, it has a little 100€ promotion, but that's all. I understand that it's quite a bit more expensive than the Z5. Nikon, unfortunately, is staying tight-lipped about user sensor cleaning and recommending that a dirty sensor be returned to them for cleaning. Here is a brief look at the main features of Nikon Z5 and Nikon D750 before getting into our more detailed comparison. They may be having a second wave, but overall the Euros are so, so much better equipped to handle it than our "Democrat hoax" touting "stable genius" over here in the good ole' US of A.. it's a safe bet that they will be far less badly effected by it than us "Were #1!" I could keep going, but the takeaway is that the lenses are close in price and each company has some that are more/less expensive than the other. The Z5 is a cheap under-spec camera made out of plastic. The Nikon Z5 is capable of excellent image quality whether shooting Raw or JPEG. 'We have to go fishing to test the Nikon Z5,' they told us. I'm a fan of Nikon and wanting to upgrade from my D7000. Toilet Roll's gear is stated as Fujifilm and Canon. Blech. * Lock-on AF still remains unpredictable / unreliable. I was talking about the Z5 and its relevance in a video heavy marketplace. I was pretty disappointed with the camera. The Primoplan 75mm F1.9 II is a redesign of the original Primoplan 75mm F1.9 designed in 1936. To get right to the verdict: the Z5’s autofocus is great! @meoreI have Z6 and native AF-S or AFP lenses on Z perform better than even on native F mount. Europe had 771 deaths yesterday, the U.S. 920. The Z5’s autofocus is impressive; Nikon has improved its mirrorless autofocus technology by leaps and bounds in the last two-plus years since the Z-mount was first introduced. If not, and if you’re good with Nikon Z lens lineup or have G/E lenses, would go with the Z5. There is little value in buying outdated spec equipment at full or near full price. As we continue to test Nikon's update of its multimedia full-framer, we've added more of our findings so far on image quality, dynamic range and video quality. Maybe that's what you're after, maybe not, but I'm very happy with the 24-70/4 on my Z6. zoom for 1900 euros. Top Intro Compatible Lenses Incompatible Lenses Specifications The Nikon FTZ is a lens mount adapter that lets us use any F-Mount Nikon SLR or DSLR lens with varying extents of usefulness on Nikon's full-frame mirrorless cameras. The Nikon Z5 continues to impress us. I was not happy. What’s the best camera for around $2000? The 24-70 f/4 is such a great lens. What a great offering from Nikon. Nikon Z5, Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S | 1/2500 sec, f/1.8, ISO 6400. In other words, it's a waste of time to read his posts. It has great handling, good shooting speeds and autofocus, nice image quality … Nikon provides the same subtlety with skin tone but in its default colours, skin tones will have a strong yellow cast. I know, there was even the 300D Firmware Hack from Features of the 10D, but back then, i still prefered my 10D, which i still own today, 17 years later. Okay, moving on to autofocus; of course, no camera these days is worth purchasing if it can’t nail focus perfectly every time in normal conditions, and still be very reliable even in the worst low-light levels. But looking at just the camera body, the Z5 is better than the RP in basically every aspect that makes a camera a camera. The possibility to shot 4K full frame is important, ultra wide angle lenses are very often used in video. Nikon Z6 ergonomics are a good combination of the Canon 5D series with something of the X-H1. The issue is that with ISO above 200, skin texture in Fuji files degenerate into a slight watercolour effect very fast. There have to be differences. Reponse photo can unfortunately not be trusted to be objective. All this bleating about "insanely good" makes you sound like a Nikon fanperson or someone in their pay. Any beginner, serious, or even professional photographer who is coming from another camera that is at least 5 years old will be truly impressed by what the Z5 offers. Would it perform great with these Dslr lenses? Again, the Z5 “wins” if you like the idea of an affordable full-frame camera that handles just like its siblings that cost up to twice as much! I don't see the Z5 as the best value. Now, three months later, the company has confirmed in a statement that the personal information of past and current employees was taken from its servers. The Z5 delivers insanely good value. That’s because I under-exposed both sets of test images by TWO WHOLE STOPS. ), Want to see what a HUGE difference a “correct” exposure can make, at ISO 12800? So why is Technical Editor Richard Butler feeling so much more positive about the new camera than he was about its APS-C sibling? The $50 FTZ adapters are so existing Nikon users can use their F-mount lenses to fill in the gaps in the Z lens lineup. They both drive though. Still of course, everyone is cautious, but also more relaxed. SLR Lounge helps over 1.5 million photographers master their craft. Once you see it, it's almost impossible to unsee it. That noise reduction (plus cheating half a stop on ISO) is why Fuji seems to be a full stop better in high ISO than other APS-C cameras. @bernardlang, I can grant that, at least here in Italy, the R6 is selling A LOT, sorry for that. It seems strange to me that a mirrorless camera would be seen as targeted for stills shooters and not so hot for video enthusiasts. Now you can adapt that mature E mount lens catalog to Nikon Z and it even works pretty well (give Techart some time and firmware updates, it will work better still) so there's that. Fortunately there are systems that provides multitude of native lenses. The A7 is a camera you read about or watch YouTube shills talk about and buy on specs. So, read on and stay tuned! While the Z6 got third place out of the three the word "mediocre" was never said once in the autofocus chunk of the video. Nikon, Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Fuji are probably here to stay. Your account will be downgraded to a Free Account at the end of your Premium Membership trial. You got the Z5. The other limps along, unreliable and hobbled. These two drawbacks are caused by two very specific shortcomings of the Z5. It's interesting that we are getting feedback from the forums now about Z5 AF. I also maintain that DPR has been slightly too uncritical of the Z5s unbalanced feature set for the price, Since nobody will be using 4K on this camera, the IBIS is also rendered largely superfluous. * Low light continuous AF capability matches or exceeds DSLRs with fast primes. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 24.5 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 12Mb. That’s why DPR awarded it Gold.I haven’t seen the Z5 bundled with the 24-70 kit lens though, and if the only kit option is the 24-50 and you want the 24-70, then the Z6 (even the mark 2) kit makes more sense financially than buying the Z5 body and 24-70 separately. For me, the top plate display is important so I’ll be holding out for the Z6ii kit with FTZ adapter when the price drops to current Z6 kit levels. That's such a lame lie. zephyrion974They gave it a Gold for it's stills use not video. The 2nd wave in Europe isn't all _that_ grave so far. Look it up. The f1.8 range isn’t super compact but they are light and overall still the most compact to reach that level of quality since you typically need to use f1.4 or f1.2 lenses in Sony/Canon line up if you need the best possible quality. Duh. I have the Z6+24-70 f4 and it is very sharp. That's the first step towards your recovery. For what it's worth, rankings at the largest camera retailer in Japan: https://www.yodobashi.com/category/19055/19056/ranking/. Although the Z5 doesn't get the latest and greatest 24MP sensor in Nikon's arsenal, it does deliver impressive image quality across a wide range of situations. Sony lenses are much more expensive than Nikon lenses. It's also available in France with the 24-200mm lens:https://www.nikon.fr/fr_FR/product/digital-cameras/mirrorless/enthusiast/z-5-24-200-kit, or, body only:https://www.nikon.fr/fr_FR/product/digital-cameras/mirrorless/enthusiast/z-5. The autofocus is much faster and reliable in the Z50. The 24mm F3.5, 35mm F2 and 65mm F2 DG DN share similar designs and have weather-sealed metal bodies. Nikon has kind of brought its design philosophy from the Z50 to the Z5, and that's a good thing. Over there, everyone got 2K a month to stay home. Just wanna explore the video side (beginner) at a budget price? @ berardlang - the Z lenses are slow AF, large, mostly good IQ. I like the concept of a stills-oriented camera that saves money by having a light video spec. Yea, if I do stay with the Z system I'll probably do that. "Absolutely no use for mid ISO color photography?". Still, the D750 is a good starting point for image quality. That people even mention the first two generations of A7 is beyond me. NR does, however seem more intelligent$(document).ready(function() { $("#icl-5216-931184306").click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(5216); }); }) at choosing what to blur and what not to, than the D750, EOS RP or Sony a7 II. They were able to reduce cost without impacting value. Alternately, you can get it with just the FTZ adapter if you already have a bunch of Nikkor DSLR lenses to use, or you can get one of the two lens kits available, with the Nikon Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 or the Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3. And if you want quality 4k, you can still get it from Z5, albeit with some compromises like heavy crop - which all Canon users been doing with their excellent Eos R/5D Mark IV years ago. sorry, mistyping, I had understood a7rII which is why I mentioned its credentials as a landscape camera. BSI has been shown to make little difference in FF sizes. In a year when social distancing became a way of life overnight, Senior Editor Barney Britton maintained a small sense of connection via the Fujifilm X100V. [Related Reading: Nikon Z6 Review – Does Sony Have Serious Competition?]. It's fake high ISO with false numbers (tested it personally with studio lights) and hyperactive noise reduction. However, cameras using more modern (dual-gain BSI) sensors, like the Z6 and a7 III, show slightly less noise at very high ISOs in shadow regions. Keep in mind that Euro prices include VAT. But, considering what it does offer for the price tag, this is going to be our new most highly recommended entry-level full-frame camera body. Who would use a built in flash? Huh. While our full Nikon Z5 review is underway, you can now see how the camera stacks up against its peers in our studio test scene, as well as some Raw conversions. EXIF is accurate, distortion and vignette correction are built-in. Raw files provide impressive detail capture and good noise performance. This is a better result than the Z5's logical peers. I wasn't expecting miracles but I find it pretty darn mediocre. With a software upgrade the A7R II should do fine against the Z5. Nikon Z50 Review | Getting Mirrorless Right The First Time? The rear camera (or cameras) on an iPhone has all the latest bells and whistles, but how do you use them to capture a selfie or record a video of yourself? Going with your logic, Canon is also doomed which it isnt. I have eight F mount and three S lenses: for stills there is no performance difference. Free at point of service healthcare. The Sony A7ii is abysmal in use compared to the other cameras you mention. I feel this has worked out well. Simply put, Nikon may not have “stolen the crown” from Sony yet in terms of low-light autofocus with the Z5, but they’re getting close, and the Z5 builds on the Z6/Z7’s AF performance; it is NOT a step down! It also features nearly 150 wonderful images from past Olympics games. There are people that lost two SD cards at once.Everywhere I look I see people bashing Z6/Z7 for single card slot, and when Z5 comes out - the R/RP is better alternative and it has a single SD! Why do people keep saying RP is cheaper so therefore it must be the best VALUE full framer? It turns out, photographers don’t like to work this way. There little data about the Expeed 6, but my guess is the Bionz X is competitive since it’s also used in the A7 III and A7R III. But, quite honestly, it’s going to be pretty boilerplate–the older cameras are worse, the newest cameras, across the board, are great. Then talk. I’ve tried the Z5 with the 24-200mm kit lens, which has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 in the middle of its range, and it appears that for still subjects (where you can use image stabilization), the autofocus will stop functioning at light levels where the camera is otherwise capable of capturing a decent quality image. Most people shop to a budget and see what features they can get. No bad choices between the two. The Z5 is an insanely bad value compared to the less expensive A7RII. Doesn't affect stills ability. The Nikon Z5 uses pretty much the same external body design as the Z6/Z7, with a couple of small, but key, differences. Now this is the '2020 "EOS 6D"! The Nikon kit lens for the Z5 is the worst I've seen for any full frame - only 24mm @ F4 to 50mm @ F6.3 ! And even then it’s quality is far below for example the Nikon Z6, terrible viewfinder, rear screen, grip, buttons, sealing and general feel. There are no boring cameras, only boring photographers. It is absolutely no problem to make tiny, lightweight glass for that mount. But that wasn't and isn't Nikons strategy, in a declining market where many fight the battle who dies first Nikon decided to focus on the high end market where they have less competition, bigger margins, better brand image. When the Z6 and Z7 came out they were the best mirrorless still cameras on the market and arguably still are, and to deliver the demand for high end glass, to build a reputation of being the best, well for that Nikon designed big, expensive lenses and they do sell. Thanks for the heads up about run of the mill image quality from the 24-50mm. If you shoot video, then there are indeed obvious drawbacks- the Z5’s 4K video is cropped to approximately a DX portion of the sensor, so although the video files have great detail and dynamic range, they’ll require a whole different approach when you need to shoot at a wider focal length.
